Many people are headed off to their first semester at college. While it’s so exciting to be out on your own, and experience life as an adult, being on your own also comes with its own set of challenges. The Safewise blog has a great article about how to stay as safe as possible while at college.
Among the tips are to familiarize yourself with your safety office, and take extra precautions at night. And while we agree, we’d like to add a few tips as well.
- Let people know where you’re going and when to expect you back. Sharing this information with someone close to you, such as your roommate can keep you safer than you may think. If your friends don’t know when to expect you back, they may not realize you’re actually missing until it’s too late, but if they know you were supposed to be back 30 mins ago and now you’re not answering your phone, they are aware earlier that something is going on, and time is precious when it comes to finding a missing person.
- Share your location. Get your phone and share your location with someone you trust RIGHT NOW. Just do it. Ok, thanks.
- Trust your Instincts! We can’t stress this one enough. If you are hanging out with friends or at a party and just have a weird feeling, Listen to what your body is telling you and grab a ride home for the evening. Nothing good will come from you ignoring a gut feeling about something, even if you don’t quite understand why you may be feeling it right now.
